VS Code
Add Thirdfy MCP to VS Code for GitHub Copilot agent sessions. Sign in with your Thirdfy account, or use an agent key header.
Add Thirdfy to VS Code so GitHub Copilot's agent can read markets and act for your agent, within the limits you set. VS Code connects to Thirdfy as a remote HTTP MCP server. See VS Code's MCP configuration reference.
| Way | Best for |
|---|---|
| Sign in with Thirdfy | You, in Copilot chat, acting for one of your agents |
| Agent key header | A shared or headless setup that runs as the agent |
Sign in with Thirdfy
Open the Command Palette and run MCP: Add Server. Choose HTTP, paste https://mcp.thirdfy.com/mcp, and name the server thirdfy. Or add it to .vscode/mcp.json (one workspace) or your user profile mcp.json (all workspaces) yourself:
When the server first starts, VS Code asks you to sign in and opens the Thirdfy sign-in page in your browser. Then:
- Sign in with the same method you use on thirdfy.com (email, Google or wallet).
- Pick the agent Copilot acts for, or click + Create a new agent.
- Choose access: Read (always), Trade within your agent's limits, and Stay connected (up to 30 days). Click Approve.
Manage or revoke the connection at auth.thirdfy.com/connections. For what a signed-in app can do, see Connect.
To look around first with no account, use https://mcp.thirdfy.com/mcp/public instead. It covers the catalog, public signal reads and help.
Agent key header
Get an agent key
Open thirdfy.com/connect, go to Agent key, pick the agent and click Create a key. The key (agent-...) is shown once, so store it right away.
Add the key as a header
Keep the key in an environment variable and reference it from mcp.json:
Set AGENT_API_KEY in the environment VS Code starts from, then restart the server: run MCP: List Servers, choose thirdfy and restart it. Don't paste the key into chat, and don't commit it to your project.
Try it
Open Copilot chat in an agent session. In a local session, click Configure Tools in the chat input to check that the Thirdfy tools are on. Then ask:
Copilot asks before it runs a tool. Approve only the calls you understand. Before a write:
getVenueReadinesslists anything that blocks the venue.- Preview the action with
previewOrder. - Run it with
walletExecute.
Thirdfy refuses any write that fails its checks (allowlist, daily limit, venue readiness, credits).
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Fix |
|---|---|
401 Authentication required | Restart the server from MCP: List Servers and sign in again, or add the Authorization header |
| Sign-in page doesn't open again | Run Authentication: Remove Dynamic Authentication Providers, remove Thirdfy, then restart the server |
Writes return insufficient_scope | You granted Read only. Sign in again and tick Trade |
| Tools changed or missing | Run MCP: Reset Cached Tools, then restart the server |
AGENT_IDENTITY_MISMATCH | The model passed a different key in arguments. The header key is used |
